Seafood is loved by one and all. It has this exotic feel, mixed with a tangy aroma and has a melt-in-mouth tendency. But many of us are fond of a certain rare kinda soup. Yep, you got that right. Shark fin soup is a popular choice for many people.

Being expensive just adds to the dish, I guess. It costs more than $100 after all. So what, you ask? There are many exquisite dishes which are very expensive. Well, now comes the surprise. It is made out of shark fins, the same sharks which are not killed but have their fins taken off leaving them handicapped, in human terms. What do I mean?

See for yourself.

Fearsome, aren’t they?

Well, that is what most of us believe anyway. With the shark movies and…? I can’t think of anything else really. Cause if you look at the statistics, you’ll know that there are only 19 shark attacks per year in the US. Meanwhile…

“11,417 sharks are killed per hour” — Huffington Post, 2013

100 millions sharks are killed annually

Yes, sharks are among the endangered species. Humankind has managed to make several species extinct, let’s hope sharks aren’t next. Reasons? The same old overfishing and trading are there of course, but there’s something else…

Shark fins

Shark fins are exceptionally valuable. It’s like those ivory teeth from elephants. But far more dangerous… Why, you ask?

Cause the sharks are… almost buried alive!

Well, figuratively anyway. After the fins are cut, the sharks are often put back in the water. What’s the use though? The fin does not grow back EVER. And the sharks cannot swim either.

Sharks just lay at the bottom of the ocean.

The helpless sharks just lie at the bottom of the ocean. Starving and probably getting eaten by other fishes.

Hands aren’t necessary to live. Fins are!

The shark fin trade

Yes, the shark fin trade is a big deal. There have been protests for stopping it by shark finning for shark conservation but still.

Shark fin soup

Shark fin soup is extremely rare and hence is so in demand. It is illegal at many places.

Shouldn’t it be illegal?

Shark finning is banned at many places but it still exists in countries with poor regulations. Shark fins are still traded in many states of the US.

What’s scarier than an ocean with sharks? An ocean without them.

Are they any more dangerous than we are?

Which brings us to the question, who is more dangerous? Looking at the stats and pictures, I don’t think I need to say it out loud.

That is all. Spread the awareness by sharing it!
