8 Mythical Creatures Existed in Real Life That You Didn’t Know About
Kraken, Unicorns and Moby Dick!
We all have heard those stories about a giant whale named Moby Dick, and about fire-breathing dragons. Our endless love for fantasy and fiction also makes us wonder how life would be if we could see these creatures.
Well, our ancestors might have. They could actually have Ghost and Nymeria (shoutout to all GoT fans) as pets. It sounds almost magical, doesn’t it? Because myths have to come from somewhere. And this is it.
Why don’t you see for yourself?
Yes, the dire wolves did exist. They are now extinct and only live in Game of Thrones universe, gaining our endless love from all over the globe. In real life also, they used to be huge in size. Almost scary!
Whether you’re a comic lover or a Pirates of the Caribbean fan, you’re bound to have heard of the Kraken. The monstrous beast is said to have dwelled in the seas of Norway and Greenland. A species of the giant squid, the sea monster would be a nightmare for those who traveled by sea. Or maybe it still exists? Who knows?
The good ‘ol white whale is said to be based on ‘Mocha Dick.’ Sounds funny, but there actually existed this male sperm whale that terrorized sailors in the 19th century. Another fascinating fact, right?
Okay, not the usual pretty white unicorns that we’d expect but this Siberian unicorn did exist sometime in the past. It has gone extinct now, but it used to be of the size of a mammoth. Ice age, anyone? Can you imagine how huge it was?
Sirens originated from Greek mythology who were dangerous creatures known to lure sailors. Lure them how you ask? With enchanting music and amazing singing, of course. These were said to be inspired by dugongs though, that also caused shipwrecks.
We all have heard about a creature who is half-lion, half-eagle. Well, historian Adrienne Mayor believes that the griffin’s tale originated from ancient gold miners who brought paleontological observations. There are still theories that oppose it though. But imagine the possibility!
Okay, not the flying and the fire-breathing dragon you expected but myths are always exaggerated, right? This Komodo dragon can still kill you with a bite though. Pretty cool, eh?
This legendary creature is a nightmare for those who have livestock, especially goats. The sighting began in Puerto Rico which is claimed to be somewhat like wild coyotes suffering from an infectious skin disease. Now, the appearance makes sense, doesn’t it?
